🎯 MrBeast's team: your thumbnail is a promise
Welcome back to TWISM!
Keep the thumbnail from your last YouTube upload in mind while you read this one.
On Oct 27, MrBeast's head of virality sat down with YouTube's creator liaison and its discovery lead on YouTube's Creator Insider channel. Chucky Appleby's rules for titles, thumbnails and intros apply to anyone who posts video, and the test that checks them is free in YouTube Studio (Creator Insider).
A thumbnail that wins more clicks can lose you views. Here's why, and how to test yours this week. 👇
Don’t renew your social media tool by default: the plan you signed two years ago may no longer fit your team, your content volume or your approval workflow. Compare before you sign again.
Renewing feels safe, but it’s still a decision. Agorapulse’s free buyer’s guide helps you list what your team needs for the next two years, calculate the full cost of renewing versus switching (workarounds and migration included), and ask vendors 10 key questions before you sign.
🎬 Your title, thumbnail and intro are one promise
MrBeast's team treats the title, the thumbnail and the first seconds as one package. Chucky defines packaging as "the title, the thumbnail, and the overall idea," and a title and thumbnail that match each other do better than ones that don't (Creator Insider).
YouTube autoplays videos on the home feed, so when a viewer pauses on yours, "the thumbnail disappears" and the video starts (Creator Insider). The intro has to deliver what the thumbnail promised, right away.
Do this: watch the first 10 seconds of your last video with its thumbnail open next to it, and check that they promise the same thing.

🙈 A clickier thumbnail can cost you views
A thumbnail that oversells gets the click and then loses the viewer. A misleading title and thumbnail pull people in. Then they leave early, and "that's not a good signal" (Creator Insider).
Paying off the promise late costs you too. Deliver on the title in the second minute, and "they're probably not going to watch as long" (Creator Insider).
Do this: if your thumbnail promises more than the video delivers, change the thumbnail. The video is what has to earn the watch time.
🎁 Book 10 ad spots before Black Friday, get a whole email free
Selling to social media marketers this Black Friday? 19,000-25,000 of them open every TWISM send. They're social media managers, creators, agencies and small business owners who run their own accounts.

There's one top spot per send, and only 7 left before Black Friday.
🧪 YouTube will test 3 thumbnails for you, free
YouTube Studio will test up to 3 titles, 3 thumbnails or both, and the winner is the one with the most watch time. YouTube says it chose watch time over click-through rate, and the test works on new uploads and on videos you already posted (YouTube Help).
It's desktop only, with Advanced features turned on. It skips Shorts, scheduled lives, Premieres and made-for-kids videos.
In YouTube Studio, open the video (Content → pick the video).
Click A/B Testing in the Title box or under Thumbnail.
Choose title, thumbnail or both.
Upload up to 3 versions.
Click Done.
Results take a few days to 2 weeks and come back as Winner, Performed Same or Inconclusive. Changing the title or thumbnail mid-test stops it, so leave the video alone until the result lands.
Do this: put 2-3 thumbnails on your next long video and let YouTube pick.

🔁 Your old videos may want a new thumbnail
The thumbnail that won at launch can lose later. On MrBeast's channel, "Jimmy's face typically wins" when a video is new. On re-tests of older videos, the versions without his face sometimes win (Creator Insider).
It flip-flops with the audience, so his team keeps testing old videos.
Do this: run the test on your 3 best older videos, with one version that leaves your face off the thumbnail.

🧘 You don't need MrBeast's whole testing setup
You don't have to run all of MrBeast's tests to get the benefit. Small creators ask Chucky if they need the whole setup, and "the answer is no," because trying to do everything leads to paralysis (Creator Insider).
Make the best video you can, and don't fear a flop. The algorithm "doesn't decide if your content is good or not" (Creator Insider). Testing different hooks waits for 2027, when YouTube's tool for testing 3 versions of a video lands (Net Influencer).
Do this: run one test at a time, and read the comments after each video. Chucky reads almost all of MrBeast's (Creator Insider).
✅ What to do this week
Check your last video's first 10 seconds. If the intro doesn't deliver what the thumbnail promised, the people who clicked for it leave early.
Test 2-3 thumbnails on your next long video. YouTube picks the winner by watch time, so it catches a thumbnail that oversells.
Re-test your 3 best older videos. The thumbnail that won at launch can lose with the audience you have now.
☝️ The one-sentence version
Your title, thumbnail and first seconds are one promise, so let YouTube's free test pick the thumbnail that keeps people watching, then run it again on your older videos.
One question for you: does your face go on your thumbnails?
